THE GLINSK SHAMROCKS

In 1910 the Glinsk Shamrock’s club was formed. This more than likely referred to their green and white jerseys.  Local folklore suggests the Shamrock’s were a very talented team and difficult to beat. Matches were organised against neighbouring parishes and were known to be very competitive. One such match took place on April 21 1912 in Creggs where Glinsk defeated Fuerty in the first round of the championship. Members of the team included Tim Lohan, Jim Quine, George Fannon, Michael Lohan, James Grady, Michael Mee, Michael Noone, Thomas Hurley, Jim Mulvihill, Jimmy Quigley, Mick Quigley, John Fannon, Pake Fannon, Luke Kenny, Paddy Naughton, Pat Shallow, Tom Reynolds and Tom Conway.  Other players to feature around this time included Michael Dowd, Mick King, Paddy O’Neill, Owen O’Neill, Thomas Hurley, Johnny Keogh, Paddy Tarmey, John Tarmey, Martin Connelly, Jack Kilheeney, Tom Keane, and Joe Keigher. Later on in the decade Andy Kelly, Paddy Kelly, Martin Kelly, John Kelly, Bernie Hurley and Tommy Keaveney were prominent players.

In 1913 Tom Reynolds and Tom Curley were the Glinsk delegates at the County Convention.

In 1914 Jim Quine and Tim Lohan were selected to play for Galway against Roscommon in the Connacht championship in Castlebar. Roscommon defeated Galway by 6 points.

In 1916 James Grady was appointed a selector by the County Board to organise a trial match in order to have the best team available for the Galway senior team. James Grady was a teacher in Sonnagh National School and it’s likely that he was a County Board delegate as well as a club officer.

In 1917 George Fannon was selected on a North Board ( Galway ) team to play Galway in preparation for the All Ireland semi-final against Kerry.

THE NINETEEN TWENTIES AND THIRTIES

The early nineteen twenties were troubled times in Ireland.  After the Civil War the GAA played a huge part in healing the wounds and divisions that existed following this terrible conflict. Gradually the sound of the football became familiar again in rural parishes including Glinsk and men like Joe Crean, Pat Clarke, John Martin Costello, John Larry Cunningham ,Martin Keane, John Giblin, Luke Lohan, Tom Dillon, Willie Hynes, Tom White, Mick White, Pat Barlow, Larry Kilcommons, Martin Kilcommons Tommy Keaveney, Bernie Hurley, John Scanlon, Maurice Carney, Jim Keane, Jack Keane  and Vinny Mullaney were reported to be very talented players in their day.

In 1923, Tom Kelly from Glinsk played for Roscommon against Galway in the Connacht Junior hurling final.

In 1929 Glinsk won a 7 aside tournament in Ballymoe. The winning team featured Maurice Carney, Tom White, Mick White, Pat Barlow, Tommy Keaveney, Willie Hynes, Vinny Mullaney.

Having played most of their football in county Galway in the nineteen thirties Glinsk returned to play in Roscommon in the early forties. However apart from 1940 the forties turned out to be a very lean period for football in the parish with the result  that players from the Glinsk area elected to play with neighbouring clubs like St.Croan’s and Creggs. Prominent players at the time were Tommy Dowd, Johnny Lohan, Mick Killackey, Paddy Roarke, Tom Kilcommons, Joe Keane, Paddy Keane, Micho Kelly, Paddy Keane ( Toberroe ) Owen Timothy, Dominick Timothy, Jack Coyne, Tommy Rattigan, John Quigley, Mick Mc Donagh, Mickey Hurley, and Jimmy Mee.

In the meantime players from Glinsk continued to play competitive football with Creggs and enjoyed much success contesting County finals in 1962, 1966, and 1967.

In 1962, Creggs narrowly lost the County Final to St.Ronan’s following a replay. Glinsk players involved were Eddie Scott, Seamus Cuddy, Martin O’Neill, Donny Dowd, Bert Quigley, Vincent Quirke, Frank Quirke, Marty Cuddy and Michael Kerrane.

1967 THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA

After many years in the wilderness, 1967 heralded a new beginning for football in Glinsk. Donagh O’Malley’s free education programme gave many young people the opportunity to attend secondary school where they received expert training and coaching in Gaelic games. The era of television had also arrived and this brought matches into living rooms and homes throughout the country. The success of the great Galway 3 in a row team also had a positive knock on effect. With this renewed interest and exposure it was no great surprise that Glinsk fielded a minor team in 1967. The ‘Monks Field’ became a hive of activity once again. Training sessions under the watchful eye of manager Michael Egan and his selectors Mick Killackey and Tommy Dowd were organised on a regular basis and the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the players was extraorinary. Challenge matches were organised against Castlerea, Ballygar and Williamstown. Glinsk were paired with hot favourites Oran in the first round of the championship in Athleague. However, the Glinsk boys rose to the occasion and won on a 2—9 to 2—4 scoreline. In the semi- final Glinsk had a comfortable win over Rahara. The scene was now set for the Mid Board championship final against Roscommon Gaels. The game was fixed for Athleague on a Wednesday evening. From an early stage it was obvious that neither side was prepared to yield. The Gaels led by a point at half time.  The second half was a torrid affair with no quarter asked or given. Arguments and off the  ball skirmishes were a feature before  Roscommon Gaels ran out winners on a 2—8 to 1—4 scoreline.

Glinsk lineout: John Joe Cunningham, Michael Kilcommons, Markie Fitzmaurice, Billy Lundy, Laurence Cunningham, Gerard O’ Toole, John Hegarty, John Cunningham, Padraig Grady, Frank Brandon, Tommy Dowd, Marty Hegarty, Gerard Kelly ( Buncrower ) Sean Duffy, Tommie Lohan.  Subs: Jimmy Mulvihill, Francis Donlon, Michael Quinn, Seamus Grady, Joe Cunniffe, Jackie Quinn, Marty Kiernan.

With most of the squad still available big things were expected from the Glinsk minor team in 1968. Glinsk qualified for the 10 aside league final but disappointingly lost out to Oran in the first round of the championship. Oran also provided the opposition in the league final and sadly for Glinsk the boys in Green and Gold again emerged victorious this time by a single point 2—5 to 2—4.

THE GLORIOUS SEVENTIES

1970 will always be remembered for the dazzling football played by Brazil at the World Cup in Mexico, but for football followers in Glinsk it will be remembered as the beginning of a glorious era for football in the parish. The 1970 u 21 championship commenced with a first round game against Oran. Although the team was affiliated as Creggs most of the players came from Glinsk. It ended in a draw 7 points each with the Glinsk/Creggs combination securing a last minute equaliser. In the replay Creggs won by on a scoreline of 4—5 to 0—3 before they defeated Roscommon Gaels in the quarter final by 4—6 to 0—7.  Castlerea awaited the winners in the county semi- final. In a low scoring contest Creggs led by 2 points at half time. Eventually the experience of Castlerea team was the deciding factor and a lucky goal in the second half gave them a 1—7 to 0—7 victory.

1971 THE YEAR OF THE HISTORIC DOUBLE.

The history making minor and u21 County Championship wins surely makes 1971 the greatest ever year in the history of the GAA in the parish of Glinsk and Kilbegnet. The minor team blazed a trail of glory on their way to the County final with victories over St.Bridget’s, St.Aidan’s, St.Ronan’s and Oran.

OUR FINEST HOUR

Sunday November 14th 1971 is a date that will long remain etched in the memory of football followers in Glinsk as our brilliant minor team created history by defeating a gallant Castlerea side in the county final to become the first team from the parish to win a championship title. The beautiful green sward of St.Coman’s Park looked resplendent as the teams warmed up before the throw in. Both teams took a while to settle and with defences on top, scores were hard to come by. Andy Quinn scored a great goal for Glinsk and Luke Cunniffe added a point to leave the half time score Glinsk 1—1 Castlerea 1—1. The teams remained evenly matched throughout and while Castlerea enjoyed a monopoly of possession the Glinsk defence held firm. Micheal Collins, Andy Quinn and Mickey Lundy added to the Glinsk total. Entering the closing stages the teams were still level. Then John Donnellan gained possession from a cross field ball by James Shevlin and headed towards the Castlerea goal before sending an unstoppable shot to the net for the match winning score. Seconds later the referee sounded the final whistle and Glinsk had triumphed on a scoreline of 2—4 to 1—4. The scenes after the final whistle had to be seen to be believed. Scores of people streamed on to the pitch to congratulate their heroes. It was a day when grown men cried tears of joy as the emotion and excitement of the occasion overcame them.

There were joyous scenes when Captain John Dowd was presented with the County minor Cup by an official from the County Board.

Let’s call the roll of honour for this historic team:                                                                     Seamus Conama, Kevin Costello, John Joe Cunningham, John Pettit, Padraic Conama, Mickey Curley, Micheal Egan, James Shevlin, Mickey Lundy, ( 0—1 ) Micheal Collins,( 0—1 ) P.J.Shanagher, Luke Cunniffe, (  0—1`) John Donnellan, (1—0 ) John Dowd, ( Capt) Andy  Quinn. COUNTY FINAL: Creggs 2—7  Castlerea  St.Kevin’s  0—7

The County u 21 final against Castlerea was fixed for Knockcroghery on December 19th 1971.There was a double incentive going into the game. The Glinsk minors had by this stage won their title so the onus was in the under 21 team to do likewise. It was also an opportunity to gain revenge for the narrow defeat in 1970. It’s no exaggeration to say that Creggs had been waiting 12 months for this game with all training and preparation geared towards a return clash with Castlerea. From an early stage it was obvious that the speed, fitness and determination of the Creggs lads was a major factor as Castlerea struggled to get into the game. Points from Tommy Dowd, Tommie Lohan, Frank Brandon and Marty Hegarty were followed by a brilliant goal from Frank Brandon. Creggs led by 1—5 to 0—2 at half time. Despite persistent Castlerea pressure in the second half Creggs held firm and a goal from Tommy Dowd and 2 fifties from the boot of Markie Fitzmaurice sealed a famous victory for the Glinsk /Creggs side. Other stand out features were the immaculate high fielding of full back John Joe Cunningham and a brilliant penalty save by goalkeeper Ger Kelly. Of the 20 players togged out on the day 17 came from the Glinsk side of the parish.

Team: Ger Kelly, Mickey Curley, John Joe Cunningham, Joe Cunniffe, Michael Kicommons ( Capt ) Markie Fizmaurice ( 0—2 ) John Hegarty, Billy Lundy, Mickey Lundy, Marty Hegarty,( 0—1) Tommy Dowd ( 1—1 ) Tommie Lohan ( 0—1 )John Dowd, Frank Brandon ( 1—2 ) Laurence Cunningham. Subs: James Shevlin, John Pettit, Jackie Quinn, Micheal Egan, Paddy Quinn.

In 1972, Creggs received a walkover from Padraig Pearses in round 1 and defeated St.Aidan’s in the quarter final. Creggs who played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half led at half time bt 2—9 to 2 goals due to the excellent play of Freank Brandon and Mickey Lundy ay centrefield.

A final scoreline of 2—12 to 2—2 did not flatter Creggs. Scorers v St. Aidan’s ; M. Lundy 0—6, M. Egan, M.Hegarty and L.Cunningham 1—1 each, J.Dowd 1—0, F.Brandon 0—3.

SEMI FINAL V ROSCOMMON GAELS

In 1972, the u 21 team qualified for the county semi- final for the third year in a row but lost to Roscommon Gaels in Athleague.  It was a fast and furious game throughout with no quarter asked or given. Creggs with the wind at their backs capitalised early on with points from Mickey Lundy and Luke Cunniffe. The Gaels soon levelled but the Glinsk/Creggs side replied with two points from Mickey Lundy and a goal from Andy Quinn to leave the score 1—5 to 0—2. At this point it looked like Creggs were on their way to a second successive county final. However they were then hit with a Roscommon Gaels goal and a string of points to leave the sides level at the interval. The Gaels then took the lead and led for most of the second half. Creggs though never gave up and were just two points down entering the closing minutes. With time almost up a breathtaking goal from Michael McNamara wiped out all hopes of a Creggs comeback.                                                                                    Team v Roscommon Gaels;  ( All Glinsk bar two ) Ger Kelly, Mickey Curley, John Joe Cunningham, John Pettit, Joe Cunniffe, John Hegarty , Micheal Egan 0—1, Billy Lundy, Mickey Lundy 0—4 , Marty Hegarty, Frank Brandon 0—2 , Luke Cunniffe 0—1, Andy Quinn 1—0, Laurence Cunningham, John Dowd.  Subs: John Whyte, Kevin Costello, James Shevlin, Jackie Quinn, Paddy Quinn.

1975 A NEW BEGINNING

In 1975 Glinsk affiliated a junior team for the first time since the late fifties. Glinsk were seeking an identity of their own and after many lean years they had the players and the resources to become a force in their own right. A new club was formed and Glinsk participated in the Roscommon junior league and championship. Glinsk played their first match against Kilbride in the league and and recorded a famoust win over a strong St.Faithleah’s side in round 2.                                                                                 Team ; Tom Timothy, Seamus Cuddy, Tony Brennan, John Pettit, John Hegarty, Sean T Kelly, Jackie Quinn,  Tommie Lohan, John Dowd, Andy Quinn, P.J.Fahy, Luke Cunniffe, Mickey Curley, Tommy Dowd, Paddy Quinn.                                                                                                                                      In 1977 and 78 Glinsk won the Mid South junior league, but came up short against Athleague in the championship final.                                                                                            In 1979 Glinsk defeated Oran, Kilbride and St.Faithleach’s to qualify for the Mid/South championship final against Athleague. Reigning champions Athleague fought tooth and nail to retain their crown and while the exchanges were tough and uncompromising , Glinsk were more than a match for the title holders. However with 15 minutes to go the signs looked ominous when they trailed by 5 points but they fought back gallantly to win by a single point on a 2—9 to 3—5 scoreline.

COUNTY FINAL V SHANNON GAELS                                                                                 The County Final against Shannon Gaels took place in Dr.Hyde Park Roscommon. Mid way through the second half with Shannon Gaels leading by 7 points the heavens opened and a huge downpour put an end to proceedings. A re fixture was arranged by the County Board. As in the first game it took Glinsk quite a while to get going and they trailed by 7 points at half time, 8 points to 1. With 15 minutes gone in the second Glinsk were still 7 points in arrears but then a 5 minute goal blitz put them on the road to victory.Gerry Fahy scored the first and Mickey Lundy hit the net twice, and with points coming from the boot of  Any Quinn and Luke Cunniffe it  settled the issue as Glinsk ran out deserving winners on a 3—3 to 0—9 scoreline.                                                                                              The historic winning team lined out as follows: Sean T Kelly, Padriag Rattigan, Tony Brennan, Jackie Quinn, Martin Cunniffe, Joe Cunniffe, Micheal Egan, Michael Conacur, James Connelly, ( 0—1 ) Luke Cunniffe, (Capt. 0—1 ) Gerry Fahy, ( 1—0 ) Mickey Lundy, ( 2—0 ) Andy Quinn, ( 0—1 ) Mickey Curley, John Dowd.  Subs; James Shevlin, Tommie Lohan, Michael Kilcommons,John Hegarty, P.J.Fahy, Pat Connelly, Paddy Quinn, Brian Conway, Tom Cunningham,Johnny Gaffey.

Bonfires greeted the team on their way home. They stopped in Creggs at the Parnell Monument where they received a tremendous reception. Then it was on to Glinsk where the celebrations continued and the team received refreshments and goodies provided by Glinsk GAA club. The team was managed and coached by James Shevlin, Larry Kilcommons and Sean T Kelly.

FROM ROSCOMMON TO GALWAY

At the Annual General Meeting of Glinsk GAA club in 1980, a historic decision was made. Following a proposal by Mickey Curley, it was decided to apply to the Connacht Council for permission to transfer to Galway. The meeting took place on December 18th 1980 in Ballincurry National School. The application to Connacht was refused on the grounds that it did not receive a two thirds majority. Glinsk GAA club successfully appealed the decision to Croke Park. Croke Park ruled that the Glinsk club would draw their players from the area covered by the curacy of Glinsk and the Creggs club would draw players from the remainder of the parish of Kilbegnet.

In 1981 Glinsk made a welcome return to play their football in Galway. Glinsk made an immediate impact by qualifying for the North Board intermediate league final. In the group stages Glinsk had victories over Corofin, Milltown, Monivea Abbey and Dunmore. Their lone defeat was to Williamstown in round 3. Williamstown also enjoyed a successful league campaign and qualified to meet Glinsk in the final. Glinsk who were favoured by the strong breeze in the opening half were slow to settle down and ten minuts had elapsed before they got their first score, a point from Mickey Curley. Futher points by John Lundy (0—3) Joe Cunniffe and Mickey Curley left the interval position: Glinsk 0—6   Williamstown 0—0.  Williamstown who were seeking a league and championship double made better use of the strong wind in the second half and scored 11points. However Glinsk put in a storming finish and Mickey Lundy with a goal and a point left just a single point between the sides at the end.                                                                                                                                                  Final Score ; Williamstown 0 –11 Glinsk 1—7.   Venue ;  Mountbellew.

1985 JUNIOR A CHAMPIONSHIP

In the first round of the junior championship Glinsk were paired with Tuam Stars. Tuam were unable to field a team and gave Glinsk a walkover. In the North Board semi-final Glinsk had a facile victory over Caherlistrane in Milltown. The final against Minivea Abbey was fixed for Tuam Stadium. Nearing the end of the game Glinsk were leading by 2 points with less than 5 minutes left to play. Time was ticking away. Then the referee blew what appeared to be the final whistle. Hordes of Glinsk supporters rushed on to the pitch to congratulate their heroes. The North Board Chairman was about to present the Cup to the Glinsk captain Martin Cunniffe when suddenly the umpires informed the referee that there was still 5 minutes remaining. The pitch was then cleared and the game restarted.  With seconds remaining the Glinsk defence was caught flatfooted and Barney Costello scored the winning goal for Monivea Abbey with practically the last kick of the game. Glinsk decided to appeal the result to the North Board on the grounds that the referee’s decision is final in relation to time. Consequently a meeting took place between the North Board officers and the club.  At this meeting the club was informed that the Glinsk appeal was ruled out of order on a technicality issue. The club was represented at the meeting  by Chairman, Laurence Cunningham, Secretary James Shevlin and Treasurer Eamon Cuddy                                                                                                                   Glinsk v Monivea Abbey ; Peter Conneally, Mickey Curley, James Shevlin, Micheal Egan, Padraig Rattigan Tommy Curley, Martin Cunifffe, James Connelly, Pat Connelly, John Lundy, Godfrey Warde, Luke Cunniffe, Eamon Keane, Mickey Lundy, John Dowd.                                            Subs ; P.J.Duffy, Michael Fitzmaurice, John Connelly, Martin Hurley, Jackie Quinn, Joe Keane.

1985 NORTH BOARD JUNIOR LEAGUE FINAL

Glinsk 2—8 Corofin 1—7

History was made in Glenamddy on Sunday October 13th 1985 where Glinsk junior footballers won their very first adult title in Galway by defeating Corofin in thr North Board Junior League final. The result was made all the sweeter as Glinsk defeated the aristocrats of the game in the county and gained some consolation from the controversial championship loss to Monivea Abbey. The team was backboned by many of the players from the 1979 championship winning team in Roscommon. Mickley Lundy and Pat Connelly scored some incredible points for Glinsk in the opening half but the crucial score, a goal, came from John Lundy after good work by John Dowd to leave the half time score Glinsk 1—3 Corofin 0—4. Mickey Lundy, Pat Connelly and John Lundy added points in the second half but it took a goal from P.J.Duffy, ten minutes from the end to put the icing on the cake and seal a historic victory.

Glinsk lined out as follows: Peter Conneally, Mickey Curley, James Shevlin, Micheal Egan, Martin Cunniffe ( Capt ) Tommy Curley, Padraig Rattigan, Pat Connelly ( 0—2 ) James Connelly,  Eamon Keane, P.J.Duffy, ( 1—0)  Luke Cunniffe, ( 0—1 )John Lundy, ( 1—1 ) Mickey Lundy, ( 0—4 ) John Dowd. Other panel members: Michael Fitzmaurice, Godfrey Warde, Tommie Lohan, Jackie Quinn, Joe Cunniffe, John Connelly, Martin Hurley, Pat O’Neill, Gerry Duffy, Joe Keane, Paddy Quinn, Laurence Cunningham.

In 1985, Glinsk finshed runners up to Kilkerin Clonberne in a special 4 team tournament organised by the North Board.

In 1985 Glinsk played Milltown in the Junior B championship in Mountbellew. This was a hard fought contest between two evenly matched teams. Milltown led by 0—7 to 1—3 at half time. A missed penalty in the second half proved costly for Glinsk before Milltown ran out winners on a rather flattering scoreline of 0—14 to 1—6.                                                                                   Gilnsk ; Larry Cunningham, Jack Quinn, Michael Fitzmaurice, John Collins, Joe Keane, Micheal Egan, Kevin Keane, Godfrey Warde, ( 0—1 )  Pat Connelly, ( 0—2 ) Pat O’Neill, Gerry Duffy, ( 0—1 ) Martin O’Boyle, Tomas O’Toole, John Dowd ( 1—1 ) Tom Lyons. Subs ; Paddy Quinn, Gabriel Farragher.

1986 SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR FOR JUNIOR B TEAM

In 1986 the Glinsk Junior B team ( The club’s second team ) put in some amazing performances in both the league and championship. Under the management of Pat Curley, Jackie Quinn and Laurence Cunningham they had victories over Kilgerril, Monivea – Abbey, St.Brendan’s and Caltra and shared the spoils with Milltown and Dunmore to leave Glinsk on 10 points – a mere one point away from qualifying for the league final. The draw against Dunmore was especially costly. Glinsk were ahead by six points with time almost up but two defensive mistakes allowed Dunmore in for soft goals and ended the league hopes of a gallant Glinsk team. In the championship Glinsk recorded a famous victory over Tuam Stars. This was the first time for Glinsk to defeat Tuam in a championship match.

In round 1 Glinsk had a 4 points victory over Headford. In the quarter final, Glinsk gave a magnificent display to defeat Glenamaddy by 3—5 to 0—2.The game was played in Williamstown and Glinsk dominated from the start with Barry Kilcommons scoring a hat trick of goals to leave the young Glinsk lads with an unassailable lead at half time. Amazingly, Glenamaddy failed to score in the second half and Glinsk went on to enjoy a comfortable 3—5 to 0—5 victory. The semi- final against Menlough ended in a draw and unfortunately Glinsk lost the replay by 3 points. (0—11 to 0—8) Menlough went on to win the North Board final and only lost the County final to Killannin by a single point. Definitely a case of what might have been for Glinsk.                                                                                                                              Team v  Menlough; Liam Kenny, Edward O’Toole, Michael Fitzmaurice, Kevin Duffy, Enda Mannion, Kevin Keane, Tommy Joyce, Sean Trayers, Martin O’Boyle, Gabriel Trayers, Gerry Duffy, Tomas O’ Toole, John O’Boyle, Barry Kilcommons, Danny Kelly. McCARTHY CUP COMES TO GLINSK

In 1989 the Glencastle Lounge was packed to capacity for the visit of the McCarthy Cup, perhaps the most sought after prize in Irish sport. The Cup was brought to Glinsk by Ollie Kilkenny from the Kiltormer hurling club who was corner back on the 1987 and 1988 All Ireland winning teams.

1989 UNDER 14 TEAMS WINS FIRST COUNTY TITLE

In 1989 Ginsk under 14 footballers under the tutelage of James Shevlin created history when they won the County u 14 League final. In doing so they became the first team from the parish to win a county title in Galway. In the group stages they enjoyed comprehensive wins over Caherlistrane, Williamstown and Kilconly. In the county semi final Glinsk defeated Carna Cashel by 5 points. The final against Na Piarsaigh, Rosmuc was fixed for Pearse Stadium. Glinsk got away to a dream start with an early goal from the boot of Tommy Mulligan. Points followed from Ray and Sean Dowd before Tommy Mulligan, Sean Dowd and Francis Mulligan added goals to give Glinsk a commanding lead at half time. Rosmuc as expected  upped the ante in the second period but Glinsk defended stoutly and regained the initiative with scores from Stephen Brennan and Ray Dowd to leave the final score Glinsk 6—3 Rosmuc 2—4.

The historic team lined out as follows; Damien Brennan, Brendan Kelly, John Kenny, Gerry Roan, Colm Naughton, Ronan Kilcommons, Des Morgan, Ray Dowd ,( 1—2 ) Sean Dowd, ( Capt. 1—1 ) Seamus O’ Toole, Oliver Kenny, Dessie Joyce, Francis Mulligan, ( 1—0 ) Adrain Joyce, Tommy Mulligan, ( 2—0 ) Subs ; Stephen Brennan ,( 1—0 ) Shane  Curley, Ivan Kelly, Declan Conway, Brendan Tighe, Gerard Neary.

THE NINETEEN NINETIES—AN AMAZING DECADE

The nineteen nineties started with the Glinsk under 14 team retaining the League title  ( Two in a row ) and ended with the Sam Maguire Cup coming to the parish courtesy of Galway Football Board secretary John Power, and  members of the 1998 All- Ireland winning Galway team, Declan Meehan, Derek Savage and Shay Walshe

In 1990 Glinsk u 14 footballers had another successful year. They commenced their championship campaign with an impressive win over Glenamaddy. Wins over Williamstown and Kilconly left them facing Killererin in the county semi- final.  After a ding dong contest Glinsk emerged victorious by 4 points. The county final against Headford was fixed for Cortoon. Unfortunately, from a Glinsk point of view nothing went right on the evening and Headford ran out comfortable winners.

Team v Headford; Damien Brennan, Ivan Kelly, Enda Kilcommons, Brendan Tighe, Gerard Neary, Des Morgan Declan Conway, Colm Naughton, Seamus O’Toole, Francis Mulligan, Adrian Joyce, Stephen Brennan, Tommy Mulligan, Shane Curley, Brian Enda Kilcommons.

Despite losing the championship final the Glinsk boys soon picked themselves up and set out in determined fashion to retain the league title. Wins over Wiliamstown, St Gabriel’s and Glenamaddy put them in the league semi- final against Lettermore. Glinsk duly accounted for Lettermore by       4—11 to 2—2.

UNDER 14 LEAGUE FINAL 1990                                                                                            Glinsk 3—7 Kilconly 2—2                                                                                                                  Having qualified for their third county final in twelve months Glinsk under1 4 footballers were in no mood to relinquish their league crown. A strenuous training programme under the supervision of James Shevlin, Michael Fitzmaurice and Michael Kilcommnons was put in place. The final was fixed for the home of Galway football,Tuam Stadium. Glinsk faced a near gale force wind in the opening half but an early Seamus O’Toole goal gave Glinsk a tonic start. Kilconly soon got into their stride and led by 2—1 to 1—0 at half time.  With the aid of the elements in the second period Glinsk exerted severe pressure on the Kilconly defence.  Brian Enda Kilcommons got the opening score a brilliant goal with his right foot. Stephen Brennan scored a goal a short time later and an Adrian Joyce point was complemented by similar scores from Colm Naughton, Seamus O’Toole and Shane Curley to leave the final score Glinsk 3—7 Kilconly 2—2. The team was deservedly given a tremendous reception on their return to Glinsk.

NORTH BOARD MINOR FINAL

In 1990, Glinsk qualified for the North Board Minor B League final. This was a marvellous achievement for a small rural club. On the way to the final Glinsk had some notable victories over Williamstown, Kilconly, Kilkerrin Clonberne and Glenamaddy. The final against Kilkerrin Clonberne was fixed for Glenamaddy. With Michael Connelly outstanding in the half back line Glinsk led by a point with 10 minutes remaining but Kilkerrin Clonberne finished the stronger and held out for a narrow two point win over a gallant but unlucky Glinsk team.

In 1995 he was elected assistant secretary of Galway Football Board and he also served as secretary of Coiste Peil Na nOg for a brief period

COUNTY JUNIOR B CHAMPIONS 1991

Glinsk lost their Junior A status in 1990 which meant they played Junior B football in both league and championship in 1991. While this demotion was disappointing it gave the club a chance to regroup and introduce plans for an immediate return to Junior A football. New players like Eamon Hegarty, John Mulligan and Tom Cunningham had come on board. Glinsk had an impressive league campaign and qualified for the final against Caltra. They also enjoyed a successful championship campaign and qualified for the North Board final against Claregalway. The final was played in Tuam Stadium and history was made when Glinsk, who once played all their football in Roscommon, won their first championship title in Galway. Glinsk got into their stride from the start and scored a string of points from Sean Trayers, Pat O’Neill, Luke Cunniffe and Tom Cunningham before Man of the Match, Danny Kelly scored a brilliant goal in the 28th minute after Martin Hurley had created the opportunity to leave Glinsk with an unassailable 10 point lead at half time.

Half time score Glinsk 1—9  Claregalway  0—2.

The game was as good as over after 6 minutes of the second half when Danny Kelly scored his second goal after good approach play by Luke Cunniffe and Martin Hurley. It was plain sailing for Glinsk after that as Cunniffe, Pat O’Neill and Kevin Keane added to the Glinsk tally and they maintained the momentum right to the end. This was a fantastic team effort and a victory that will be cherished for some time to come but Pat Connelly, Martin Cunniffe, Joe Keane,Danny Kelly made a huge contribution to the success.                                                                                                              Final score; Glinsk 2—13 Claregalway  0—6                                                                                  After the game newly elected North Board secretary Laurence Cunningham presented the Frank Fox Memorial Cup to Glinsk captain Martin Hurley.

COUNTY SEMI FINAL V LOUGHREA

The county semi final against Loughrea was played ih Caltra. Both sides took some time to settle and it took a good point from Sean Trayers to change thr pattern of the game.Loughrea then equalised before Glinsk full forward Tom Cunningham scored two goals to put Glinsk in a commanding position. Points from Pat O’Neill, Luke Cunniffe and Gabriel Trayers gave Glinsk a 2—4 to 0—3 lead at the interval. Having gained an advantage at midfield, Loughrea upped the ante in the second half and it looked ominous for Glinsk when Niall FItzgerald rattled the net with 10 minutes remaining. However heroic defending by the Glinsk backs coupled with some wayward shooting by the Loughrea forwards ensured that Glinsk reached their first Galway county final on a 2—7 to 1—8 scoreline.  Scorers for Glinsk; Tom Cunningham ( 2—1 ) Luke Cunniffe, Gabriel Trayers ( 0—2 ) each, Sean Trayers, Pat O’Neill (  0—1) each

On Sunday October 6th 1991 Glinsk footballers took centre stage in Tuam Stadium where they contested the County Junior B Championship final against city side Mervue. The game acted as a curtain raiser to the senior final between Corofin and Salthill. Glinsk enjoyed the use of the breeze in the opening half and led at half time by 1—6 to 0—2. Godfrey Warde gave the Glinsk boys a dream start with an early goal and points followed from Pat O’Neill, Tom Cunningham, Enda Mannion and Danny Kelly. Mervue played some exciting football in the second half but Glinsk inspired by the brilliant free taking of Pat O’Neill held out for a narrow victory on a 1—10 to 2—4 scoreline. Glinsk had many stars on the day but for the Cunniffe brothers, Martin, Luke and Joe it gave them the unique distinction of winning junior championship medals in both Galway and Roscommon.  There was great excitement and jubilation when Laurence Cunningham presented the Mark Lohan Memorial Cup to captain for the day Michael Fitzmaurce in the absence of club captain Martin Hurley who missed the final due to injury.

GLINSK V GLENAMADDY MINOR SAGA

In the early nineties a tremendous rivalry developed between Glinsk and Glenamaddy at minor level. Overall they met 6 times between 1900 and 1993 with never more than a kick of a ball between them. It all started in 1990 when Glinsk defeated Glenamaddy on their journey to the league final. In 1991,Glenamaddy defeated Glinsk in the league by a narrow margin. In 1992 Glinsk defeated St.Brendan’s and Moubtbellew and drew with Glenamaddy before losing to Claregalway in the league semi final. In the championship Glinsk and Glenamaddy met in the first round with Glenamaddy victorious following a replay. This was a game Glinsk deserved to win but a number of defensive lapses prove crucial and Glenamaddy emerged with a lucky win by 3 points 3—12 to              2—12. In 1993 they clashed again this time in the league and again it was nip and tuck before Glan won on a 1—7 to 0—7 scoreline.

Aidan Scanlon then increased the Glinsk lead but the greater physical strength of St.Gabriel’s began to tell and a succession of points in the closeing stages gave them a narrow victory. Every member of the Glinsk team played their hearts out but goalkeeper Damien Fannon had a tremendous game and two saves he made in the second half will long live in the memory.                                                                                                             Glinsk; Damien Fannon, Fergus Hegarty, David Rattigan, Kieran Mahon, Padraic Donlon, Dermot Morgan, Kiewran Kelly, Aidan Shevlin, Aidan Scanlon, Damien Shevlin, John Feeney, Aidan Farragher, Kevin Fleming Dessie Dowd, Mark Toolan. JUNIOR A LEAGUE WINNERS 1998.

It didn’t happen overnight. In fact it all started in 1988 when an extremely talented Glinsk N.S team under the tutelage and guidance of James Shevlin defeated Inverin N.S. in the county final. Under 14 league titles followed in 1989 and 90.Players like Sean Dowd, Seamus O’Toole, Enda Kilcommons, Ger Neary, Michael Keaveney, Declan Conway, Ray  Dowd and Stephen Brennan made a huge contribution to this success. Another school’s title was added in 1992 and an under 16 league title the same year. An extremely talented minor team was unlucky to lose the league final in 1997. Having contested North Board finals in 1996 and 1997 hopes were high that Glinsk would do the business, in 1998.They commenced the league campaign with an away victory over Menlough. Further wins were achieved against Monivea Abbey, Moutbellew Moylough, Corofin, Loughrea, Milltown, Dunmore, Kilkerrin Clonberne and Caherlistrane. They suffered just one defeat at home to old rivals Kilconly. Glinsk were given an early opportunity to avenge this defeat as both sides qualified for the league final.                                                                                                                                          NORTH BOARD JUNIOR LEAGUE FINAL 1998

The final was fixed for Tuam Stadium on the 11th of October and ended in a draw Glinsk 3—4 Kilconly 2—7.  The verdict could have gone either way but although Kilconly had two chances in injury time to snatch victory a draw was probably a fair result.  The opening period saw Glinsk scoring an opportunist goal by Seamus O’Toole and points by Sean Trayers and Michael Keaveney from the penalty spot.Shortly after half time Glinsk were awarded a second penalty and this time Sean Trayers hammered the ball to the net. Then Kilconly took the lead with an excellent goal from Brian Moran and a massive point from a free by Justin Dermody. Kevin Keane scored a spectacular goal for Glinsk to regain the lead but two frees by Brian Moran left the teams level at the final whistle.

Team; Michael Fitzmaurice, Martin Cunniffe, Enda Kilcommons, Edward O’Toole, Declan Conway, Eamon Hegarty 0—1, Stephen Neary, Paul O’Boyle 0—1, Sean Trayers 1—0, Michael Keaveney 0—2, Sean Dowd, Martin Hegarty, Ray Dowd, Kevin Keane  1—0, Seamus  O’Toole 1—0.

Subs used; Stephen Brennan, Gabriel Trayers.

The replay took place in Dunmore and despite a brave effort by Kilconly they failed to add the league title to their championship success. Glinsk enjoyed an 0—6  to 0—5 lead at half time with Stephen Brennan( 3 )Sean Dowd, Seamus Toole, Paul O’Boyle hitting the target. After the break Glinsk stormed into a comfortable lead with points coming from Stephen Brennan, Paul O’Boyle, Gabriel Trayers and Eamon Hegarty. Glinsk failed to add to their tally in the final twenty minutes but they withstood a strong Kilconly comeback and held out for a famous victory by the narrowest of margins. Final score; Glinsk 0—11 Kilconly 0—10

COUNTY JUNIOR LEAGUE FINAL 1998

Glinsk junior footballers did themselves and their club proud with a hard earned  1—9 to 0—8 victory over Connemara side Micheal Breathnach in the County junior League final at Monivea and in the process regained intermediate status after a lapse of 14 years. More than a decade of near misses and hard luck stories were cast aside as Glinsk won the County League final for the first time in the club’s history to round off what was an incredible year for football in the parish. This magnificent victory provided a boost for the entire parish and was a shining example that hard work and dedication can achieve the desired result. Playing with the breeze in the first half Micheal Breathnach opened the scoring when Padraig O’Griofa pointed after 2 minutes. Then Kevin Keane replied for Glinsk and it was Keane again who got the most important score of the game with a brilliant goal in the 15th minute. 2 pointed frees from Stephen Brennan left Glinsk with a 2 point advantage at half time 1—3 to 0—4.

The Inverin boys began the second half in sprightly fashion and scored 3 points in as many minutes.  The stage was now set for a Battle Royale. Bravery and character would decide the issue and fortunately it was Glinsk that came up trumps in that regard. Stephen Brennan kicked 4 magnificent points from both frees and play to complement similar scores from Sean Trayers and substitute Danny Kelly to seal what was a sweet victory for Glinsk.                                                                                             Final score; Glinsk 1—9  Micheal Breathnach  0—8.
